Assistant Director of the Center for Civic Engagement Position at the College of Charleston

The College of Charleston, in Charleston SC, invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of the Center for Civic Engagement.  This is a full-time, twelve-month position with benefits.

The Center seeks to provide meaningful service experiences to encourage personal, civic, and intellectual growth through community/college partnerships by:  providing options to enhance education and work experience beyond the traditional classroom, challenging individuals and groups to become active in the local community, strengthening the bond between the College of Charleston and the greater Charleston community, and encouraging students, faculty, and staff to increase their awareness of community needs.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree; Master's degree in public administration, student personnel services, or related area preferred. Experience in higher education programming or non-profit management. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.  
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of service-learning, community based research, community service, volunteer coordination, campus/community partnerships, information systems, event planning, and management experience. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop, coordinate, and assess multifaceted events and programs. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications.  
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Must be willing to work weekends and evenings. Local travel and occasional weekend and/or overnight travel required. Must possess a valid SC driver's license.

1. Develops, plans and manages the coordination and execution of various special events and programs on and off campus. Provides oversight and guidance in developing and implementing numerous, highly-attended co-curricular service vehicles throughout the academic year, which builds civic involvement & commitment at the College (ex: Volunteer Fair, Dash for Trash, Homecoming service component, Spring into Service, Hunger Homelessness Awareness Week, MLK Challenge, etc.). Monitors event/project expenses. Researches, develops and supervises community service programs, both co-curricular & academic, to address real and identified community needs. Establishes and nurtures productive relationships with community partners in promotion of service programs.

2. Plans, develops and manages the Alternative Break Program, consisting of 7-12 national and international trips annually. Supervises student officers from the Alternative Break Club; recruits and selects trip leaders, participants, and advisors. Designs and implements training trip leaders and participants using Break Away curriculum. Expands program with new projects/sites and strengthens relationships with existing partners. Evaluates program and seeks ways to improve participant experiences. Establishes relationships with Institutional Advancement and ORGA to explore and seek out private and public sources of funding for the program.

3. Manages the business operations of the Center and coordinates office functions. Conducts weekly staff meetings and orders departmental supplies & equipment. Produces and maintains records, reports, and documentation of programs and events and their outcomes. Designs and maintains the Center's website, social media, and blog, ensuring compliance with the College's brand.

4. Manages and trains AmeriCorps VISTA staff associated with Alternative Break and co-curricular service vehicle planning.

5. Hires, manages and trains student workers who oversee placement of students, faculty and staff in community service programs. Provides leadership, advice and assistance to staff regarding procedural compliance.
