Sustainable Energy Workshop 2013: June 27 & 28

CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING WORKSHOP:

Teaching Sustainability Concepts
in Engineering Courses

JUNE 27 & 28, 2013

Held since 2006, a Center for Sustainable Engineering (CSE) workshop for faculty members teaching engineering courses will again be offered by the Center for Sustainable Engineering, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Arizona State University, and Syracuse University. A workshop entitled “Teaching Sustainability Concepts in Engineering Courses” will be held on June 27-28 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The workshop sessions will start at 9:00 am on Thursday and will adjourn by 4:00 pm on Friday so participants can catch flights home the same evening.

The workshop will accommodate 30 participants. Faculty members from engineering departments at four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. who have not participated in any previous CSE workshops are eligible to apply. Participants will be chosen based on a competitive application process. All participants are expected to pay for their travel and hotel in Atlanta.  The workshop itself, along with workshop materials and all meals from Thursday breakfast through Friday lunch, are free to participants.

IJSLE Special Edition Announcement

The editors of the International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering, Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (IJSLE) are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a Special Edition of the Journal.  The special edition will be entitled ‘Opportunities and Barriers to Integrating Service Learning in Engineering into Engineering Education’.

Manuscript submittal deadline is August 30th 2013 - with publication planned for December, 2013.  Website:  www.ijsle.org

Purpose and Scope
The editors invite submission of high-quality manuscripts that explore: 1) assessment, 2) scholarship, and 3) interdisciplinary engagement related to Service Learning in Engineering (SLE) - both domestically and internationally.   A few examples of potential topics which might be addressed are provided below:

1.      Assessment of Service Learning in Engineering
a.      Methods and results of assessment of student learning
b.      Methods and results of assessment of community impacts
c.      Methods and results of assessment of impacts on the University, College, Department and Employers
d.      How might SLE practices be changing what, and how, we assess in engineering education?

2.      Scholarship of Service Learning in Engineering
a.      What is ‘scholarship’ as related to service learning in engineering?
b.      P&T committees and the review process – what is SLE ‘value’?
c.      Comparison of publications valued by the SLE community and those valued by P&T committees
d.      Other avenues to scholarship: conferences, books, grants, workshops, etc.
e.      Comparisons with service-learning in other disciplines - what is the state of the art.  What can engineering learn from other disciplines?

3.      Interdisciplinary Engagement
a.    Examples of technically rigorous engineering research with strong socio-economic context
b.    Entrepreneurship and SLE
c.    Curricular models of ‘breaking down the silos’ with SLE

Participants in Engage Chicago live, learn and serve in neighborhoods throughout the city, giving them the opportunity to take advantage of everything summer in Chicago has to offer.


Engage Chicago is an immersive field study program, designed to give students a powerful summer learning experience in one of the world's most dynamic cities. Through academic coursework, hands-on experience at top organizations and institutions, thoughtful reflection, and a summer living with a vibrant community of peers, Engage Chicago is a powerful opportunity for students to learn about a great city, about social change, and about themselves.

June 21st to Aug. 16th.
In previous summers, students have interned at organizations such as the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, the Illinois Maternal & Child Health Coalition, and the Chicago Public Schools Office of School Turnaround. They explored the rich culture and history of Chicago and the theories and ideas behind community development work in Field Studies in Civic Engagement, a course taught by Professor John "Jody" Kretzmann, a world leader in community development.

Engage Chicago offers students the opportunity to:
  • Gain invaluable work experience at top organizations in Chicago
  • Earn course credit while learning among a community of peers
  • Experience daily life in the diverse, dynamic city of Chicago

1) National Service Knowledge Network
The National Service Knowledge Network is a one-stop shop of a wide variety of resources that the Corporation for National and Community (CNCS) has to offer. This website provides a space for national service staff, members, partners, and CNCS grantees to share and review information related to national service. The website includes a few key areas including the following: veterans and military family discussion group, multimedia resources, and conference materials plus much more. This site provides a forum for participants, members, and disability coordinators to share inclusion materials in the field, e.g., policy and procedures, reasonable accommodations policy and member handbooks. 2) Institute On Disability University of New Hampshire The Annual Disability Statistics Compendium is a web-based tool that pools disability statistics published by various federal agencies together in one place.
