Dear community-engaged scholarship colleagues in Canada,

The Community Food Security Hub of the Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement (CF:ICE) Project is seeking proposals from existing (or fledgling) collaborations between community organizations and colleges or universities in Canada.

CFICE funding for this year is not intended to be the core funding to support the creation of a brand-new partnerships (which must demonstrate other sources of funding or in-kind support). Rather, CFICE funds allows for an extension of the work and an evaluation of impacts of ongoing or recently completed projects on communities, on students, on faculty, etc. including consideration of how community-campus partnerships could be made more effective (e.g. through an examination of possible institutional changes).

Stanford University Hiring 3 Directors of Community Engaged Learning

[Announcement from he-sl listserv]

STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Director of Community-Engaged Learning
Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education

Stanford University’s Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) seeks three Directors of Community-Engaged Learning (D-CELs) for a pilot program that is part of a comprehensive reshaping of the undergraduate general education curriculum.  The D-CEL initiative grows from the 2012 Study of Undergraduate Education at Stanford , which asserted that “community engaged learning not only advances the fundamental aims of a Stanford education, it also exemplifies the fundamental character of the institution.”

The three D-CELs will work as a team across each of Stanford University’s seven schools and collaboratively with related programs, departments, and institutes to promote, support, and expand community-based learning opportunities for students.  Ideally, each of the three D-CELs will be associated with and have competence in a distinct, but interconnected, thematic area: education, health, or environmental sustainability. While thematic areas of expertise will vary and each D-CEL may assume distinct auxiliary functions (assessment, communications, outreach, etc.), there are four shared responsibilities that comprise the core responsibilities of the D-CEL position:  1) service-learning course facilitation and support, 2) Internship facilitation and support; 3) faculty and community partner outreach and development; 4) program administration.

Community-based learning is defined broadly; however, the activities supported through this initiative share the following characteristics:

1.      The activities will be a required component of an academic program or course.
2.     The learning objectives of the activities will extend beyond pre-professional practice to include the development of civic leadership competencies, education for citizenship, and/or the development of civic identity.
3.     The activities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the Haas Center’s Principles of Ethical and Effective Service.

Recognizing the interdisciplinary and interconnected nature of the work, the D-CELs are part of a community of practice that includes the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Haas Center for Public Service, and a wide variety of academic programs, departments, and institutes.  The D-CELs will be lodged in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, supervised by the Executive Director of the Haas Center for Public Service, and guided by an advisory board with broad university representation.

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of distinction in relevant public service and experiential education endeavors, as well as a terminal degree in a relevant field or scholarly and professional accomplishments indicative of an ability to work as a peer with campus and community partners. While each D-CEL will be expected to support a distinct portfolio of new service learning courses and internships, their success will also be gauged on their ability to work collaboratively—with each other, and with campus and community partners.

The position requires excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as experience working with undergraduates, faculty, and community partners.  Candidates should also have at least two years of experience in course facilitation or teaching, as well as two years of internship facilitation and support, outreach and development, and program administration, preferably in an academic liberal education setting.

The D-CELs are expected to be in place by the beginning of the school year (September). Therefore, preference will go to candidates who are ready to begin employment as soon as possible.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

To view the complete job description for this position and to assure that the hiring dept. has immediate access to your resume, you must apply online at http://stanfordcareers.stanford.edu/.
Enter Job #52767 into the Keyword search box.

All offers of employment are made contingent upon the candidate being able to demonstrate eligibility to work in the US.

Stanford University is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to diversity of staff.
