Terrific VISTA positions in Washington, DC

We have four VISTA positions open to work in a partnership between DC Public Schools and the George Washington University! Please distribute

School/Community Liaison DC Public School Position - 3 positions open
George Washington University (GWU), in downtown Washington D.C., is seeking School/Community Liaison VISTAs to serve in elementary and middle schools in Washington, D.C. With a strong record of developing reciprocal, respectful, active, and democratic partnerships, GWU works with the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) to place VISTAs in needy urban schools in the District. The VISTAs will assess needs and opportunities to expand out-of-school-time program quality and resources at their schools. You will support the Title I schools to improve after-school and summer programming and build new partnerships and volunteer programs to enrich the lives of children. You will work for one year with GWU and DCPS school staff and community members, while also gaining experience, community development, organizing, and communication skills. School placement sites may be elementary or middle schools. Key attributes a successful Community Liaison VISTA will need to perform successfully: • Desire and ability to work effectively in an urban school environment with teachers, school administrators, parents, and students. • Ability to reach out to and form relationships with community organizations. • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and achieve goals. • Adaptability, flexibility, and willingness to learn from experience. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Experience volunteering and working with volunteers and volunteer programs.


Empowering Males of Color - DC Public School Central Office Position - 1 position open
The partnership between GWU and the DC Public Schools is designed to expand the number of partners and volunteers who provide human, financial, in-kind, and other resources to support schools in need in Washington, DC. VISTAs work at individual schools and the district headquarters to initiate, build, improve, and sustain partnerships and volunteer or mentoring programs. To meet the objectives for this VISTA position, the incumbent will do the following activities: -Work with participating schools, partner organization(s), mentors, and other stakeholders to coordinate logistics for Saturday mentoring and literacy sessions; -Develop a system for reporting mentee and mentor program attendance as well as progress reporting from Saturday Academy school points of contact. -Research the pool of mentoring/tutoring organizations that currently operate in DC and compile a list of potential partners best suited to align themselves with and execute the mission of 500 for 500 -Utilize compiled list of potential partner organizations to initiate conversations and vetting processes -Submit final recommendations of potential mentoring/tutoring organizations -Conduct research on effective mentor recruitment and on-boarding practices -Submit mentor recruitment and on-boarding strategy.
