CALL FOR PAPERS

Transformative Change in Community Mental Health

A special issue of The Global Journal of Community Psychology Practice
(GJCPP)

Guest editors: Greg Townley and John Sylvestre

Send proposal submissions or inquiries to the Guest Editors:

In many parts of the world, community psychology has historical roots in the field of mental health (Reich, Riemer, Prilleltensky, & Montero, 2007). Community psychologists have made important and innovate contributions in helping people with psychiatric disabilities, including George Fairweather’s Lodge program in the 1960s, Ed Seidman and Julian Rappaport’s work with the GROW mutual aid organization in the 1980s, and Sam Tsemberis and Beth Shinn’s work on Housing First in the 1990s. More recently, community psychologists led by Bret Kloos at the University of South Carolina, Geoffrey Nelson at Wilfrid Laurier University, and José Ornelas at Instituto Superior Psicologia Aplicada have developed the International Network for Transformative Change in Community Mental Health. This network has grown to include an international group of academics and graduate students who are seeking to establish an alternative paradigm to the promotion of mental health based in community settings upon the values of citizenship, recovery, empowerment, inclusion, and social justice.

This special issue aims to advance scholarship and critical thought regarding transformative changes in community mental health.

Submission of Proposals
Proposals for manuscripts and creative projects (up to 500 words) are invited which address this aim.  Possible topic areas include, but are not limited to:
(1)   Transforming mental health services and systems of care
(2)   Proposing new goals for mental health promotion and intervention
(3)   Methods and projects focused on promoting user involvement and
user leadership in research
(4)   Broadening partnerships to promote mental health in community settings
(5)   The comparison of mental health approaches in different
cultural/ national contexts
(6)   Specific contributions that community psychology can make to
community mental health

Manuscripts may be empirical studies or praxis-oriented pieces. We also welcome proposals for creative projects that reflect the aims of this special issue, including videos and interviews with key stakeholders involved in transformative change in community mental health. Proposals for book reviews, tools, and other multimedia formats will also be accepted. In addition to contributions from community psychologists, we are interested in papers authored by or including the perspectives of mental health consumers/ survivors/ users, practitioners, policy makers, and researchers in other fields or disciplines who are doing related work.

Format for Proposals
