VISTA positions available

[Announcement from he-sl listserv]

Old Dominion University's Center for Service & Civic Engagement seeks to engage student volunteers in service to the local and global community.  We are seeking VISTAs in order to increase capacity and the ability of our students to perform service in three specific areas.  The first is in supporting neighborhood stabilization in Lamberts Point, a community adjacent to the campus.  The second is to increase the capacity of our Alternative Breaks program to increase trips that address poverty.  The third and final area is to increase the capacity of programs that address the food insecure in the Hampton Roads region.

For the Lamberts Point Stabilization project, the VISTA will work with the community as a liaison to the University and will research root causes of poverty in the community and build structure and partnerships with the community to address those needs.

For the Alternative Breaks Program, the VISTA will research opportunities to serve on poverty related projects outside of the Hampton Roads community, build a training program for student volunteers and leaders, assist in the writing of manuals and risk management policies, create a marketing plan, and recruit students to participate.

For the Hampton Roads food insecurity project, the VISTA will increase the capacity of projects that partner with the local food banks and food pantries by researching gaps in current projects and addressing those gaps by establishing projects and volunteer opportunities for students.

If you are interested in applying, please contact Tami Park Farinholt at 683-3065 or tpark@odu.edu.
