Social Enterprise and Service Learning Event at UC-Berkeley

[Announcement from he-sl listserv]

Dear Higher Ed Service-Learning Friends,

Greetings. I hope you are well.

We hope that you can join us at UC-Berkeley on May 25-26. Our keynote speaker on May 26 is Joe Kapp, former NFL quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings and UC-Berkeley head football coach and now a champion for youth enterprise.

As you may know, Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship—SAGE—encourages teens to start social enterprises, and then present them to a panel of influential judges at the end of each academic year.  The teens do so under the direction of university students, who serve as service-learning role models and coaches, in their role as business consultants to their younger protégés.  To this end, I am pleased to announce that the University of California-Berkeley will host the SAGE USA Tournament on May 25 and 26, 2012. Thus, the purpose of this email is:

a.     To invite you to serve as esteemed judges and/or observers; we expect about 30 SAGE teams to compete for the top businesses in 2011-2012, and
b.     Provide you with the itinerary, below.

The welcome reception and opening ceremonies are set for Friday evening, May 25. First round judging is set for Saturday morning, May 26. The final round is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Judges may elect to judge one or both sessions. Following the afternoon round, we will hold a dinner and awards ceremony.

The best social enterprise team and the best commercial enterprise team advance to the SAGE World Cup on July 27-31, 2012, where they will compete with SAGE champion teams from 15 countries. Please send an email to me at cdeberg@csuchico.edu if you want more details.

If  you can’t join us, please feel free circulate this to West Coast colleagues.

SAGE would like to thank our main sponsors for this event: Staples Foundation for Learning, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation, the Louis and Harold Price Foundation, and Pacific Gas & Electric.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Curt
