Civic engagement activities,
including service-learning, can serve as bridges that span culture and
experience. Certainly, service is a mechanism for change that teaches,
generates new knowledge, and empowers those who participate. Across the
country, tribal colleges are using service to honor the past and, at the same
time, clear paths toward healthy futures. Tribal colleges serve a unique
purpose and constituency in our postsecondary educational landscape. Each
is a distinct community asset that is permeable, transparent, extensions of the
environments in which they reside. Most students, faculty, and staff of
the tribal college are longtime members of the local community or residents of
the reservation. As such, individuals often fully engage with and relate
to the college as clients, customers, and beneficiaries, as well as donors,
educators, and caretakers. Service then becomes a mutually
beneficial enterprise that promotes the success of all people
involved.
Please join our discussion regarding service-learning in the diverse and vibrant world of tribal colleges and Native American communities. Learn about the richness of tribal colleges and the issues pertinent to quality service projects and programming. Explore strategies for effective teaching and practice. And, share your experiences, challenges, and opportunities with colleagues.
