JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Director of Service Learning       DIVISION: Academic Affairs                                   

APPROVED BY:  Provost        REPORTS TO: Dean of Undergraduate Studies  

EFFECTIVE DATE:  June 1, 2013

PURPOSE OF POSITION Introduce students, faculty, and community partners  to the varied use of community services as an educational tool in the advancement of course learning outcomes and student development. The position is responsible for program development, resource management, and community outreach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PRIMARY DUTIES

1.      Assist faculty in understanding the place of service to the community within an educational setting.

2.      Assist faculty in using service learning tools to introduce students to experiential-based learning with community partners.

3.      Assist faculty administrators in identifying and using community resources as learning tools in an academic setting.

4.      Manage a budget for internal and external learning experiences.

5.      Identify and call into play university resources for program development.

6.      Work with regional and national organizations supporting service learning advancement and development.

7.      Identify appropriate community partners for service learning courses and serve as liaison to the community agencies

JOB REQUIREMENTS      

EDUCATION

Successful candidates will possess a Masters Degree in a related area.

EXPERIENCE

1. Past work with community  organizations
2. Basic grant  writing skills
3. Work in the non-profit sector
4. Successfully applied  management skills

BACKGROUND

1. Knowledge of  learning and student development theories

2. Willingness  to integrate the world of work and academic  activities

3. Has demonstrated successful management skills

SUPERVISION

1.       Coordination of resources  and student service learning sites

2.       Position supervises  the student contact  with community  entities and the interaction between school and community  entities.

3.       Position determines the appropriateness of the service learning offered and the appropriateness of the classroom/community interaction
