Thinking
It Through: Tools for Teaching Ethics in Service-Learning
Some of the most valuable lessons in
service learning occur when ethical dilemmas are part of the experience but
often, teachers feel poorly equipped to help students navigate the tough questions
when they arise. Texts on Ethics often focus on theoretical problems, but
because service learning happens outside the classroom, practitioners need
concrete approaches that can be readily applied. This webcast will introduce
the “toolbox” approach to ethical reasoning pioneered by the Rutland Institute
for Ethics. By presenting three different ethical approaches in common-sense
ways, the “toolbox” allows teachers to help students develop better critical
thinking and ethical reasoning skills using common-sense principles within an
easy to apply framework.

Presenter:
Teddi Fishman
directs the International Center for Academic Integrity, a consortium of
approximately 250 colleges, universities, and schools with more than 1000
individual members. She has spoken on academic integrity topics in the U.S.,
the U.K. Israel, Egypt, and Australia, promoting “educational” rather than
punitive approaches to developing students’ ethical decision-making capacities.
Her interest in ethics and integrity dates back to her pre-academic career in
law enforcement which also inspired her master's thesis. She believes that
education, integrity and interaction are key to building a more peaceful, just
and sustainable world.
