BEST PRACTICES FOR ENGAGING STUDENTS AND
COMMUNITIES

ACPA’s inaugural Symposium on Service-Learning,
co-sponsored by the Commission for Student Involvement, will provide a forum
for exchanging innovative ideas and promising practices relevant to
service-learning practitioners and scholars.
The symposium will take place December 5-7, 2012 at the Baltimore Marriott
Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland, and focus on four central themes: 1)
Developing a Common Language, 2) Exploring Key Elements, 3) Exchanging Best
Practices, 4) Connecting with One Another.
This Symposium will be
specifically geared toward new to mid-level professionals in student affairs
working with service-learning programs or offices, though interested graduate
students, academic faculty, and community partners are welcome to participate.
Educational formats at this symposium will include: topic-based plenary
sessions, campus and community spotlights, community and student panels,
structured small-group discussions, and individual working time.
ACPA and the
Commission for Student Involvement are pleased to present an extraordinary
lineup of Keynote Presenters who will offer their combined knowledge and
expertise as notable scholars and practitioners in the field. They include:
Robert G. Bringle (Appalachian State University), T.W. Cauthen III (University
of Georgia), Andrew Furco (University of Minnesota), Barbara Jacoby (University
of Maryland), Susan Robb Jones (The Ohio State University), Peter Mather (Ohio
University), KerryAnn O'Meara (University of Maryland), and Kristan Cilente

The Symposium
will also feature campus and community spotlights highlighting best practices
at colleges and universities from across the country, as well as organizations
engaged in service and civic work such as Campus Compact, Break Away, and the
American Democracy Project. Participants will also benefit from small
discussion groups, student and community panels, and a resource fair, all
intended to provide necessary space for processing, networking, and sharing.
