Disability Inclusion At The National Conference on
Volunteering And Service- Chicago, IL, June 17th - 20th
National and community service can be an opportunity for
individuals to give back to their community while developing networks,
enhancing work skills and earning assistance for post secondary education.
Nonprofit leaders, community-based programs, volunteer leaders, disability
organizations and anyone who is interested in the field of volunteerism and
national service should attend this year's National Conference on Volunteering
and Service "Turning Point 2012". A number of venues, including the
pre-conference sessions described below, will provide opportunities to learn
more about the inclusion of people with disabilities in national and community

The following sessions will provide opportunities to
learn about and share promising practices related to disability inclusion,
either as the primary topic of the session or as a part of a wider examination
of diversity in service programs.
Pre-conference Sessions:
Sunday, June 17th, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) is
conducting “Maximizing Disability Inclusion in Your State” (Session ID 2936 and
Twitter #NCVS2936).
This session will focus on how programs can develop
disability inclusion performance measures, leverage partnerships to accomplish
those measures, and share resources that increase capacity include all
qualified individuals with disabilities. Participants will be an integral part
of developing a system to plan, measure, and evaluate a project’s
accomplishments in order to assist organizations in telling a story of their
increased inclusion with compelling, measurable results.
Sunday, June 17th, 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM
The National Service to Employment Project (NextSTEP) is
conducting “Service Works: Creating Meaningful Service Experiences that Provide
Professional and Educational Benefits to Members and Volunteers” (Session ID
2910 and Twitter #NCVS2910).
Meaningful service begins with a decision about the
volunteer opportunity and whether it is a good match. Strategies to support an
effective match and help individuals build on their experiences for future work
or education will be discussed.
Conference Sessions:
Monday, June 18th, 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
NSIP is conducting “Maximizing the Potential of Every
Volunteer: Universal Design and Volunteer Management” (Session ID 2653 and
Twitter #universaldesign).
This session will help you think about innovative
practices for creating inclusive programs in order to maximize the potential of
all volunteers, including volunteers with disabilities.
Monday, June 18th, 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
Three programs will be sharing their perspective on
“Building Inclusive National Service and Volunteer Programs: Staff and Member Perspectives”
(Session ID 2362 and Twitter #disabilityinclusion).
In this session participants will learn strategies for
building stronger local programs and launching statewide inclusion initiatives.
Illinois and Iowa inclusion team members, national service participants, and
program staff will present best practices.

The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) is training
and technical assistance provider on disability inclusion, under a cooperative
agreement (#08TAHMA001) from Corporation for National and Community Service
(CNCS). NSIP partners with the Association on University Centers on Disability,
National Council on Independent Living, Association on Higher Education and
Disability and National Down Syndrome Congress to build connections between
disability organizations and all CNCS grantees, including national directs, to
increase the participation of people with disabilities in national service.
