in Your “Place”: Creating Sustainable Community Connections for the
Environmental Sciences”
Dr. Cassie
Quigley, Associate Professor, Teacher Education, Clemson University
Ms. Robin Pope,
Preservice Teacher Education student
Ranger Cathy
Taylor, Park Ranger, Paris Mountain State Park, Greenville, SC
In this
workshop, Clemson Faculty Fellow Dr. Cassie Quigley (Science Educator), Ms.
Robin Pope (Middle School preservice teacher), and Ranger Cathy Taylor (Park
Ranger at Paris Mountain State Park in Greenville, SC) will discuss the
benefits and challenges of service-learning in environmental sciences. This
workshop will provide attendees with specific ways to connect with partners in
your community including ways to ensure meaningful collaboration, example
projects, and materials on how to engage your students. Additionally, this
workshop will provide a variety of perspectives by including the professor who
implemented the projects, a student who participated in two different projects,
and a community member who has benefitted from the relationship. Although
the topic area will be specific to environmental science, the presenters will
provide helpful tips and suggestions to anyone interested in infusing service-
learning into their classrooms.
