Timothy J. Shaffer is an assistant professor in the Department of
Communication Studies and assistant director of the Institute for Civic
Discourse and Democracy at Kansas State University. He is also principal
research specialist with the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the
University of Arizona as well as associate editor of the Journal of Public
Deliberation. As a scholar, Shaffer centers his research on the advancement of
democratic practices through deliberative politics and citizen engagement by
civic professionals in higher education and other institutions. Shaffer has
published in journals such as The Good Society, National Civic Review, and the
Journal of Public Deliberation. He is co-editor of Deliberative Pedagogy:
Teaching and Learning for Democratic Engagement (Michigan State University
Press, summer 2017) and coauthor of Making Democracy Work as It Should: Stories
and Lessons from Cooperative Extension Professionals (Kettering Foundation
Press, summer 2017). Shaffer received his Ph.D. from Cornell University.
