Associate Director of
Service-Learning, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond,

Position Description:
The Associate Director of
Service-Learning at Virginia Commonwealth University provides support for the
day-to-day operations of the VCU Service-Learning Office, including managing the
Office's small grant programs; teaching service-learning teaching assistants;
consulting with faculty, staff, and off-campus partners; designing and
providing professional development materials and trainings for faculty, staff,
and community partners; developing eNewsletters, website and social media
content; and participating in collaborative research projects and program
evaluation.
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is one of
the premiere urban public research universities in the United States and is one
of only 40 institutions in the country recognized by the Carnegie Foundation
with both its ‘Community Engagement’ and ‘Research University, Very High
Research Activity’ designations. VCU is located in the heart of
Richmond, Virginia and serves over 32,000 students in more than 200
programs and includes an academic campus, a medical campus and premiere health
care system. VCU takes its commitment to community engagement
seriously and has been nationally recognized for its work in community
engagement.
In VCU’s strategic plan, Quest for Distinction, community
engagement is one of the key themes, and the Division of Community Engagement (DCE) is prepared to
lead the university in becoming a national model for community engagement and
regional impact. By serving as a portal for access, the Division connects the
university with the larger community and engages faculty, staff and students in
service. Currently, more than 3,300 students per year enroll in designated
service-learning classes.
The DCE resides within Academic Affairs, under the
Office of the Provost. The Associate Director reports directly to the Associate
Vice Provost for Community Engagement.
Required qualifications include a masters degree in an academic
discipline (or equivalent terminal degree); at least 2 years of program
administration experience; experience working in or with universities and
community organizations; demonstrated competence in the use of database,
spreadsheet and social media software programs; excellent written and oral
communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills.
