Dear Colleagues:
A new publication from the American Association of Community
Colleges, "Cultivating Community beyond the Classroom," provides
ideas for developing reciprocal, collaborative service learning partnerships.
The 29-page monograph features a variety of replicable examples from 16
colleges that participated in AACC’s 2009-2012 national grant program,
Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning. The Horizons
college projects focused on social media, environmental education, and healthy
families.
The monograph also includes the results of two recent AACC
research studies: one found promising outcomes related to student retention,
and the other (in collaboration with California Campus Compact) assessed the
value of service learning to community partners.
The entire text of the monograph may be found at
While this monograph was written with community colleges in
mind, it includes topics and recommendations that may also be useful for others
in K-12, higher education, and community-based organizations involved in
service learning and community engagement.
Visit AACC's main service learning website at www.aacc.nche.edu/servicelearning
for other publications, resources, and curriculum tools.
This is the final monograph in a series of AACC service
learning publications made possible by 18 years of generous support from the
Learn and Serve America program of the Corporation for National and Community
Service. If you have any questions or comments, please contact:
