DIRECTOR OF CIVIC
ENGAGEMENT
Southwestern University
invites applications for the position of Director of Civic Engagement.
This is a full-time, eleven-month position with benefits reporting to the
Provost and Dean of Faculty through the Associate Vice President for Academic
Administration. The purpose of the Office of Civic Engagement is to
collaborate with students, faculty, and the greater community to move beyond
traditional practices of volunteerism, service, activism, and community-based
learning.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to: managing the
daily operations of the Office of Civic Engagement; partnering with faculty
members to develop and implement community-based learning projects within
academic courses; providing leadership and expertise in establishing and
sharing best practices for community-based learning pedagogy with faculty
members, students and community partners; cultivating and sustaining
multi-layered community partnerships that give the campus community
opportunities to participate in a wide range of civic engagement and
community-based learning activities; developing programs and projects that
allow students to learn about social and public issues as engaged citizens and
through the lens of the chosen discipline; providing research and writing
grants that support civic engagement and community-based learning activities;
developing and implementing assessment programs for community-based learning
projects; writing internal and external reports on civic engagement; raising
awareness about local issues and needs that can be actively and effectively
address by campus community members; and serving as a liaison between campus
and community partners.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree and at least five years of
work-related experience with community-based learning and civic engagement in a
college environment; demonstrated leadership in collaborative settings;
understanding of and commitment to a liberal arts education, including the
ability to relate to a liberal arts faculty; experience partnering with faculty
members to develop and implement community-based learning projects within academic
courses; experience developing and writing reports/grants for various
constituencies; demonstrated ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders
and constituency groups including administrators, faculty, students, staff,
community partners, and other external constituents; strong communication and
organizational skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and manage detailed
work.
