National Community College Conference on Service Learning and Community Engagement

May 18-19, 2018

Red Rocks Community College announces the Call for Proposals for its 2018 National Community College Conference on Service Learning and Community Engagement. This dynamic and relevant event is an opportunity for community college faculty, staff, and administrators to network and learn about promising practices in the field of service learning and community engagement. The conference will feature nationally known speakers, local community-based panels, interactive workshops, and roundtable sessions.

At a time of change in our national and international spheres, we invite you to join our conversation by submitting proposals that address the conference theme. How can we ensure service learning benefits the public good, whether in curricular or co-curricular settings?

Registration for Pen to Paper 2017 closes in 5 days!!!

Join us for Pen to Paper: A writing retreat focused on writing with, for, and about service and engagement>> to be held on the campus of Nazareth College in Rochester, New York beginning Thursday, November 9^th through Saturday, November 11^th.

During Pen to Paper you will have the unique opportunity to discuss your manuscript with editors from some of the top journals in the field of service-learning and community engagement, explore various publishing outlets, receive mentoring from senior faculty mentors, share your ideas with peers from across the country, and of course, have the time to write and revise.

Whether you are ready to write or ready to publish, this event is perfect for you. We will be joined by editors from six publishing outlets to help you on your way. Registration includes programming materials for Pen to Paper, overnight accommodations for Thursday and Friday, November 9^th and 10^th, and meals throughout the retreat. Now Accepting Nominations for the 2018 Newman Civic Fellowship The nomination period is now open for the Newman Civic Fellowship, which recognizes community­-committed students from Campus Compact member institutions. The Newman Civic Fellowship honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders and a tireless advocate for the civic engagement of higher education. You can learn more about the 2017 Newman Civic Fellows here. In the spirit of Dr. Newman's leadership, we are seeking nominations of undergraduate or graduate students who engage in collaborative action with others in order to create long-term social change, take action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization, and demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement. Each Campus Compact member president or chancellor can nominate one student to become a Newman Civic Fellow, who will then represent their institution in a national group of public problem solvers. The fellowship is a one-year experience, during which time fellows have access to learning opportunities, networking events, and mentoring. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides in-person and virtual learning opportunities focused on the skills fellows need to serve as effective agents of change in addressing public problems and in building equitable communities. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE EASTERN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (EPA) 2018 ANNUAL MEETING

Northeast Regional Conference at EPA

The SCRA Northeast Regional Coordinating Committee invites paper, poster, workshop, roundtable, symposium, and panel proposals for its SCRA NE Conference at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association. This year, the EPA meeting will be held in Philadelphia, PA at the Downtown Marriott Hotel from Thursday, March 1^st to Saturday, March 3^rd.  Students (both undergraduate and graduate) are strongly encouraged to submit a proposal. 

SCRA’s Community Psychology regional conference provides an opportunity for community-minded academics, field-based practitioners, and students in the Northeast Region to come together to share their work in research and evaluation, prevention and intervention, coalition building, community advocacy, and social justice.  Interdisciplinary and practice-focused submissions are welcome and encouraged. We invite all attendees interested in community psychology to join us for a social event on TBD (details to be announced at a future date).
Topic areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:

·         Community Empowerment
·         Coalition Building
·         Community Advocacy
·         Prevention/Intervention Efforts
·         Ethnic/Cultural Studies
·         Settler Colonialism
·         Economics, Social, and Cultural Inequities
·         Other Areas of Social Science that Focus on Community Work

There will be an award for best student poster

To be part of the SCRA conference at the EPA meeting, please submit abstracts to the EPA website at http://www.easternpsychological.org. The deadline for regular submissions is November 15 and the submissions deadline for the special undergraduate poster session is December 1.

In the online submission forms, there is a place to indicate that you would like your proposal to be considered for inclusion in the Community Psychology (SCRA) section. Submission requirements include: 
1.   Names, affiliations and e-mail addresses of all authors;
2.   Names and affiliations of presenters;
3.   Proposal type (paper, poster, workshop, symposium, roundtable*, panel);
4.   Title of submission;
5.   Short abstract (75 words); and
6.   Long abstract (500-1000 words) that includes importance of research, methods, findings, and conclusions.

Please note that all presenters and attendees must register as EPA members or associates.

Producing informed and civically engaged citizens is a fundamental objective for many colleges and universities, but the way civic engagement is put into practice varies greatly from one institution to another. While most strive to increase the civic-mindedness of their students, there isn’t necessarily a clear picture of exactly what civic learning looks like or how outcomes can be assessed.
