The University of Dayton has recently posted the position opening for our Executive Director of the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community.  

The University of Dayton seeks a collaborative and strategic leader to serve as the next Executive Director for the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community (Fitz Center). This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative leader to mobilize faculty and students to address important needs of the Dayton community and help advance the University’s commitment to civic engagement, community engaged learning, student leadership development, as well as excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service. The Executive Director provides vision and leadership for the Fitz Center. This is a 12-month, full-time staff position with university benefits.

Pen to Paper Writing Retreat: Writing With, For and About Service- and Community-Engagement

Pen to Paper is an academic writing retreat designed to provide time, space, and resources to help faculty, professional staff and graduate students working on (or planning for) journal manuscripts about service and community-engaged scholarship.  During the two-day retreat participants have time to discuss ideas with journal editors, receive mentoring from faculty coaches, share ideas with colleagues and peers, and write.

The program is designed to accommodate 15-20 participants in each track; therefore space is limited to 40 total. The retreat will be located at Bay Pointe Inn in Shelbyville, MI on scenic Gun Lake (near Kalamazoo, MI; less than an hour by car from Grand Rapids, MI and slightly over an hour from Lansing, MI) 

This year, Pen to Paper will offer two tracks:  Planning to Write and Manuscript-Ready.

·         Planning to Write: for those beginning to strategize about writing journal articles stemming from well-developed projects or community engagement experiences.

·         Manuscript-Ready: for those seeking advice on polishing draft manuscripts and selecting journals for submission.

Please remember to join or renew your membership to CCPH before it lapses. A Message from Al Richmond Talking about racism is never easy. Doing something about it can be even more challenging! All of us want to see changes in policies or structural barriers that facilitate or support racism. The quest for change on any issue demands more than a deep desire or commitment. Change demands action! I applaud the leadership of the American Public Health Association for elevating the dialogue on racism to a national conversation by sponsoring a series of webinars that explore the intersection of health and racism. This is a bold step, and one that places racism on the national agenda as a major health issue in America.  As an international organization committed to addressing and promoting health equity and social justice through partnerships between communities and academic institutions, CCPH continues to define an action plan to address racism. I hope that you are sharing the statement on Advancing Social Justice through Community-Campus Partnerships, that was released in July. The next step is to learn more about what you are doing to address racism in your community via trainings, forums, or policy statements. I am especially interested in knowing how community-campus partnerships are working together in this space. No act to address racism is too small or too insignificant. Remember, any movement for social justice gains momentum through every act carried out by committed people and organizations.  Over the next year we will keep you apprised of the work being done by CCPH and our members to create change. The CCPH website, listservs and E-News will serve as portals for the dissemination of information on this important issue. Your input in the process will allow us to be informed about the breadth and depth of work being done at every level of our society to address racism. Time Sensitive Announcement Registration Open for the Community Engagement Institute (CEI) to take place Friday, October 2, at the University of Alabama, Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center (BJCC) in the East Meeting room. Please register early to ensure your seat for this FREE annual event here. This premier educational and training event is designed to benefit both community and academic partners in the greater Birmingham area. This year's Institute will explore concepts related to health equity and social justice in communities, and why and how community engagement and collaboration are effective public health research and community building practices. CCPH Executive Director Al Richmond will be one of two keynote speakers. News from CCPH Al Richmond becomes one of the Faces of the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI)! National Institutes of Health (NIH) releases video of Al speaking on what the PMI means to him and his family. Al was a speaker for the Precision Medicine Working Group Meeting and participants were highly engaged as Al shared the work of CCPH to advance Community Review Processes (CRPs) as a strategy to better understand the cultural and contextual issues that influence research in communities. Since President Obama announced this initiative earlier this year, NIH and others have tried to embrace and move technology, scientific understanding and patient engagement into every day medical practice. Regional Community Partner Forums on Community-Engaged Health Disparities Research, coming to Boston, Denver and Minneapolis this Fall 2015! CCPH’s Community Network for Research Equity and Impact (CNREI) and the Center for Community Health Education research and Service (CCHERS) are please to announce that we have been awarded funding from National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) for three Regional Community Partner Forums on Community-Engaged Health Disparities Research, to build on three previous National Community Partner Forums. The forums will be held in the Upper Midwest, Northeast, and Rocky Mountain regions of the U.S. Each regional forum is open to community leaders and community-based organizations that are interested or involved in research as a tool to advance health equity and social justice. I hope this email finds you well! We are so excited to open the application for the 2016 IMPACT Conference planning committee.

This year's conference will be from February 18 – 21, 2016 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in Amherst, MA. As we begin conference preparations, we are looking for a great group of students, staff, year of service members, and nonprofit professionals to join our national planning committee!
