Civic engagement activities,including service-learning, can serve as bridges that span culture andexperience. Certainly, service is a mechanism for change that teaches,generates new knowledge, and empowers those who participate. Across thecountry, tribal colleges are using service to honor the past and, at the sametime, clear paths toward healthy futures. Tribal colleges serve a uniquepurpose and constituency in our postsecondary educational landscape. Eachis a distinct community asset that is permeable, transparent, extensions of theenvironments in which they reside. Most students, faculty, and staff ofthe tribal college are longtime members of the local community or residents ofthe reservation. As such, individuals often fully engage with and relateto the college as clients, customers, and beneficiaries, as well as donors,educators, and caretakers. Service then becomes a mutuallybeneficial enterprise that promotes the success of all peopleinvolved.

DeanMcGovern serves as executive directorof the Montana Campus Compact, andassistant professor at The University of Montana. He earned his doctoraldegree in higher education administration, his master’s degree in communityhealth administration, and a baccalaureate degree in physiology. Dean’sresearch, teaching, and scholarship, pertain to various topics in highereducation and citizenship including academic leadership, service-learning, andcivic engagement. He regularly presents and works with educators, students, andnonprofit professionals to help them dream, lead, and communicate. Dean and hiswife, Amy, reside in beautiful Missoula, Montana, where they live, love, learn,and chase after their five children. Academic and Professional Development Opportunities at American University

Dear service learning colleagues,

I wanted to share information about several academic and professional developmentopportunities at American University, which may be of interest to yourstudents. Through the Washington Semester Program, we offer exciting andchallenging seminars in Transforming Communities, International Environment andDevelopment, and Peace and Conflict Resolution. Participation, providesstudents with an opportunity to explore these fields in-depth, to hear fromdozens of experts, and to participate in for credit internships, all whileliving in Washington, DC during an election year!

Transforming Communities explores the concept of community, what makes acommunity healthy, and how we can marshal resources and energy at all levels ofgovernment and all sectors of society to strengthen our communities. International Environment and Development students study key challengesand solutions in issues such as biodiversity, climate change, poverty andinequality, and public health. They then travel abroad to Costa Rica(fall) or Ghana (spring), to explore these issues in a real-world setting. In Peace and Conflict Resolution, students consider current andhistorical conflicts, causes, and potential solutions with the help of numerousexperts in the field. They then travel to the Balkans or Cyprus/Turkey tostudy conflicts on the ground. All three programs attract students from awide variety of disciplines, all of whom share a commitment to a better nationand world. And, all three emphasize experiential and service orientedprojects at the grassroots.

Students also have a two-day internship each week. The internshiporganizations range from nonprofits and NGOs engaged in advocacy and/orservice, government agencies that impact society, and those in the privatesector with a commitment to community improvement. This experience, alongwith the accompanying classes, can be extraordinarily helpful in enhancingprofessional development and guiding students’ career decisions.

In addition, students can elect to complete an independent research projectusing primary sources in order to more fully explore a topic of interest.

Students in these three programs report that their program was an invaluablecomplement to their studies on their home campus. Each combines strongacademics with experience in the field. Each exposes students to policyand (in part because of our large population of international students)international context. All enable students to take advantage of theopportunity to apply what they have learned with you to their own careerexploration.

Hitachi Foundation Announces Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneur Award

The Hitachi Foundation recently launched its search foryoung entrepreneurs across the country who are making a living and making adifference in their communities – and we’re hoping you can help us spread theword.

In its third year, the Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneur Programprovides financial and business support for up to five entrepreneurs whosebusinesses improve the lives of low-income individuals. This could result inanything from creating quality jobs, producing new products and services ordevising management strategies that propel the business and people forward. Theselected entrepreneurs receive $40,000 over two years, along with leadershipdevelopment, business mentoring, technical assistance and access to a networkof peers and advisers.

The first round application deadline is March 30, 2012.

Previous winning entrepreneurs have run businesses thatfocus on everything from mentoring youth in struggling school districts andpainting blighted buildings to providing micro-loans for start up businessesand converting waste from coffee grounds to into quality crops and good jobs.

Gateway to College National NetworkOffers Funding for College/K-12 Partnerships to Serve Out-Of-School Youth

PORTLAND,Oregon (March 2, 2012) – Gateway to College National Network (GtCNN) has fundsavailable for partnerships between colleges and K-12 school districts toimplement the Gateway to College dropout recovery program. In the fall of2012, GtCNN will select up to ten college/K-12 partnerships for multi-yearcontracts worth between $325,000 and $440,000. In addition to start-up funds,successful applicants will receive training, technical assistance, professionaldevelopment opportunities, and program evaluation—from the initial year ofplanning and training, through program implementation, and for as long as theprogram remains a member of the network, which currently includes programs atthirty-five colleges in twenty states. The initialapplication process will close on April30, 2012. Contracts will beannounced during the fall of 2012.

The Gateway to College Model

Gatewayto College is a nationally-recognized dual credit program that serves youth whohave dropped out of school or are significantly behind in credits and unlikelyto graduate. GtC classes are taught on the college campus. Students begin withthe Foundation Experience, a learning community where students takedevelopmental reading, writing, and math. After completing Foundation, studentstransition to regular college classes where they continue working toward theirhigh school diploma and, simultaneously, an associate’s degree. Each student isassigned a student support staff member who acts as a mentor and advisor byproviding the support and individual attention that is vital to successfullyserving this student population.

Gatewayto College at the local level is inherently sustainable—the initial start-upfunding pays for planning and early implementation costs until the programbegins serving students and K-12 per-pupil expenditures start coming in. Theselocal dollars fund an increasing percentage of program costs, with each programdemonstrating a sustainable budget funded primarily by K-12 dollars by aboutthe end of their second year serving students.

Successfulapplicants for start-up funds will demonstrate:

Flexible systems that allow students to earn a high school diploma (either through the college or in cooperation with a K-12 partner) and provide access to public K-12 education funds for high school completion;
Strong partnerships between the college and the local school district(s) involved in program implementation;
The desire to embrace the Gateway to College academic approach and student support strategies at every level throughout the college; and
Compatibility of the Gateway to College model with the mission and vision of the college and school district, in order to support the required commitment to working with dropout youth

At Gateway to College National Network, we believe in building the capacityof states, colleges, and school districts to expand educational opportunitiesfor high school dropouts and underprepared college students so that all youngpeople may attain academic credentials. We currently serve Gateway to Collegeprograms at thirty-five community colleges in twenty states. Our strategiesinclude: creating and replicating innovative programs, building partnerships,influencing systems, conducting research and sharing what we know, helpingeffect policy and regulatory changes, and providing customized consultingservices. The University of Idaho’s Service-Learning Center iscontinuing the Wilderness Service-Learning Field Course thissummer (9 July – 1 August 2012). We collaborate with the Conservation SocialSciences Department, the Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation and the USForest Service to teach this intensive three-week field course in Idaho’sdesignated Wilderness Areas*. Please help us find interested students! Thereis no “out of state” tuition for summer courses at University of Idaho. Allstudents pay in-state fees.

We are looking for students to learn and serve in the heartof the rugged, wild northern Rockies; earn academic credit,participate in field lectures and campfire discussions, work alongside theprotected-area managers, and gain on-the-ground experience in protected-areamanagement. Massachusetts will soon track civic engagement at itspublic colleges, addressing increased concern that Americans aren’t equipped toimpact their communities or interact meaningfully with government.

While it hasn’t been decided exactly how citizenshiplearning will be evaluated, the Board of Higher Education’s Tuesday votemandates that civic engagement be measured along with more traditionalstandards such as graduation rates.

Higher education leaders, citing low voter turnout andother measures of civic engagement, have long doubted colleges do enough toprepare students to contribute to society. Eight state college systems nowrequire students to receive some form of civic education, and some individualcampuses have made citizen preparation a priority, said Carol Geary Schneider,president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Shebelieves Massachusetts is the first state system to mandate that civicengagement at its two- and four-year public colleges be measured and comparedto other states.

Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas (28 milesnorth of Austin), invites applications for the position of Director of Civic Engagement. This is a full-time, twelve-month position with benefits reporting tothe Provost and Dean of Faculty through the Associate Vice President forAcademic Administration. The purpose ofthe Office of Civic Engagement is to collaborate with students, faculty, andthe greater community to move beyond traditional practices of volunteerism,service, activism, and community-based learning.

PrimaryResponsibilities include but are notlimited to: managing the daily operationsof the Office of Civic Engagement; partnering with faculty members to developand implement community-based learning projects within academic courses;providing leadership and expertise in establishing and sharing best practicesfor community-based learning pedagogy with faculty members, students andcommunity partners; cultivating and sustaining multi-layered communitypartnerships that give the campus community opportunities to participate in awide range of civic engagement and community-based learning activities;developing programs and projects that allow students to learn about social andpublic issues as engaged citizens and through the lens of the chosendiscipline; providing research and writing grants that support civic engagementand community-based learning activities; developing and implementing assessmentprograms for community-based learning projects; writing internal and externalreports on civic engagement; raising awareness about local issues and needsthat can be actively and effectively addressed by campus community members; andserving as a liaison between campus and community partners.

RequiredQualifications: Bachelor’s degree and at least three years ofwork-related experience with community-based learning and civic engagement in acollege environment; demonstrated leadership in collaborative settings;experience partnering with faculty members to develop and implementcommunity-based learning projects within academic courses; experiencedeveloping and writing reports/grants for various constituencies; demonstratedability to work with a broad range of stakeholders and constituency groupsincluding administrators, faculty, students, staff, community partners, andother external constituents; strong communication and organizational skills, aswell as the ability to multi-task and manage detailed work. PreferredQualifications: Master’s degree andfive years of work-related experience with community-based learning and civicengagement in a college environment

The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) is pleased to announce our next web conference to be held on Wednesday, February 29th at 3:00pm EST on including and supporting seniors and members with acquired disabilities. People can acquire disabilities at any point in their lives. For some seniors and those interested in volunteering and service, providing accommodations to someone with an acquired disability can be a sensitive subject; people are sometimes hesitant to identify as having a disability or they may be resistant to disclose their limitations. This webinar will address how programs can include seniors and members with acquired disabilities and reduce or remove barriers to service.

Specifically, this presentation will:
-Define ‘acquired disability’ and how it relates to the definition of a person with a disability
-Discuss the invisible barriers to volunteering and service people with acquired disabilities experience
-Share ways to reduce or remove barriers to service as well as encourage members and volunteers to reach out for assistance and accommodation

The speaker for this presentation will be Robin Fisher, Foster Grandparents Program Manager for the State of Delaware.

In this interactive webinar, the presenters will share their personal story of violence and their work to engage students, other faculty, administrators, and community partners in reducing sexual assault and dating violence. Examples of both curricular and co-curricular programs that bring awareness, educate, and provide victim services will be highlighted. Finally, the speakers will facilitate discussion about obstacles and opportunities that exist on our campuses today.

Presenters:

Dr. Curt Brungardt and Dr. Christie Brungardt have a passion for making this world a better place! They are best known as social entrepreneurs who have worked tirelessly to address issues of injustice and inequality. Between them, they have 37 years experience in higher education where they have been active in the fields of leadership development and civic engagement.

Dr. Curt Brungardt is the senior member and creator of the Department of Leadership Studies and co-founder of the Center for Civic Leadership at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. He is the Omer G. Voss Distinguished Professor of Leadership Studies and the Executive Director of the Center for Civic Leadership. He specializes in political leadership, social change, and community organizing. Curt has authored and co-authored several books and numerous articles in the field of civic leadership.

Dr. Christie Brungardt is an Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies, Director of the Women’s Leadership Project, and co-founder of the Center for Civic Leadership at Fort Hays State University. She specializes in women and leadership and women studies. She has developed and implemented many of Fort Hays State’s civic engagement programs and activities like the annual state-wide Kansas Women’s Leadership Conference. Christie publishes and presents in the fields of service learning and civic engagement, gender issues in leadership, and the scholarship of engagement.

On July 3, 2008, Curt and Christie’s lives changed forever. Their daughter, Jana Mackey, a 25 year-old law student at the University of Kansas was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in Lawrence, KS. Like her parents, Jana was also a committed social activist. She was well known throughout Kansas for her advocacy for women’s rights. She spent years volunteering to aid victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Since Jana’s death, Curt and Christie have been active nationally in the effort to reduce violence against women. They have establishedJana’s Campaign Inc. with the single purpose of reducing domestic and dating violence. They believe it is their responsibility to use both the story of Jana’s life and the story of her death to reduce violence. They both chair the Attorney General’s Batterers Intervention Program Advisory Board for the state of Kansas; they have been active in improving sexual assault response in rural areas; they have recruited hundreds of volunteers (from 19 states and 4 foreign countries) to work in the areas of domestic violence; they have traveled the country raising awareness of this issue and have lent their support to many national and international groups dedicated to this same purpose; and recently, they successfully helped spearhead the most comprehensive domestic violence legislation ever to pass in Kansas. Last spring the state of Kansas recognized Curt & Christie Brungardt with the “State Champions” award for their work to reduce violence against women.
