Paid Summer Internship Program - Summer Service Scholars

Summer Service Scholars (SSS) is an academic internship program in New York’s State Capital through the Siena College Center for Academic Community Engagement. Accepted Summer Service Scholars spend 9 weeks with a nonprofit community partner in the Capital Region, working on projects that build capacity within the organization. SSS provides participants with engaging and valuable experience working with nonprofits, and an opportunity to engage in conversations about social justice with a cohort of other students interested in making a difference in the community.

In conjunction with their full-time service, participants enroll in a Siena College course, Internships in Community Development, for 0-6 credits, meeting once a week on Siena’s campus for sessions that focus on professional and community development. Scholars have the opportunity to utilize on-campus housing at Siena, and can apply to a competitive stipend pool once accepted to the program. This summer, a number of our students that are awarded a stipend, will have the opportunity to enroll in an AmeriCorps term and receive an Education Award following the completion of their service in the program.

Free PD offering in Minnesota

[Announcement from he-sl] Facilitating Complex Conversations Participating in complex conversations allows young people to develop critical thinking and leadership skills. In this 6-hour, interactive training, you will experience two simulations from our annual National Youth Leadership Training, learn about NYLT’s impact from a panel of previous participants, strengthen your ability to facilitate conversations with young people about taking action, and connect with other youth development professionals.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to… Facilitate meaningful discussion with young people about power and privilege.  Explain how and why to participate in the National Youth Leadership Training.  Describe how NYLT’s activities influence young people to make change within themselves and in their communities. Connect with other youth development professionals in Minnesota.

Instructions: Enter the TIES Conference Center through the north side on Larpenteur Avenue. The Larpenteur Room is on the north side of the second floor. Free parking is in the TIES parking lot, to the west of the TIES building on the south side of Larpenteur Avenue. Cost is free. Coffee will be served. NOTE: Please bring your own sack lunch! If you are able to attend, you will need to fill out a short, pre-session survey in order to register. It should take about 5 minutes to complete. The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement is recruiting an Assistant Director for Civic Engagement Education to serve as our lead educator on the theory and application of civic engagement.  This is a unique opportunity for an individual with exceptional teaching, training, and facilitation experience who also brings substantive experience in community engagement work outside of higher education.  We would appreciate your assistance in spreading the word to your colleagues in and outside of higher education.

About the Position:

With responsibilities for the management and strategic development of the Civic Scholars and Urban Fellows programs, the Assistant Director fosters student civic mindedness, engagement and leadership in civic life, most often as educator, facilitator, leadership trainer, advisor, and consultant.  In addition, the Assistant Director provides expert training and consultation to university staff and faculty seeking to incorporate civic engagement in their curricular and co-curricular programs.  As part of the Gephardt Institute’s senior leadership team, the Assistant Director is responsible for fostering a culture of civic mindedness at Washington University and ensuring that students are substantively trained and prepared for responsible community engagement, life-long civic mindedness, and future civic leadership as alumni.  Read the complete job description on the HR website (Job ID 35608).

Key Criteria:

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Policy, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Non-Profit Management, Education, or a related field.
• Five or more years’ full-time professional experience that includes both community engagement work and work in a higher education setting.
• Substantive knowledge, demonstrated experience, and passion for civic and community engagement.

·         Exceptional teaching, training, listening, group facilitation, and conflict mediation skills. Ability to facilitate deep learning and dialogue within a highly diverse, intellectual, and passionate student body.

·         Energy, vision, initiative, creativity, empathy, tolerance for ambiguity, ability to embrace and navigate change, sound judgment, tact, and sense of humor.

Conference on Community Writing deadline

Dear colleagues,

There’s only one more week to submit a proposal for the Conference on Community Writing, which will be hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder on October 19-21.  Proposal deadline is Friday, February 3.

We have some incredible speakers and events lined up, including a full day pre-conference workshop on Wednesday, October 18 with Highlander Education and Research Center, formerly the famous Highlander Folk School that trained the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks and a  performance of THE PRISON STORY PROJECT:  ON THE ROW, a production of the Northwest Arkansas Prison Story Project, which since 2011 has been sending teams of writers into prisons, leading writing workshops with the inmates, and then developing readers’ theatre scripts that are performed by professional actors both for the inmates who write the material and for public audiences. 

 

Keynote speakers are Ellen Cushman and Elaine Richardson.

We have several DeepThink Tanks planned:

Circulation and Ecologies, led by Laurie Gries, Jenny Rice, Nathaniel Rivers, Michele Simmons, Kristen Seas Trader, and John Tinnell.

Race, Systemic Racism, and Critical Literacies led by Steven Alvarez, April Baker-Bell, Carmen Kynard, and Eric Darnell Pritchard.

Environmental Communication and Environmental Justice, led by Laurie Grobman, Donnie Sackey, and Stephanie Wade.

Feminisms, Activism, and Community Writing, led by Jenn Fishman and others, TBD.

Eli Goldblatt will facilitate a discussion on Community Writing in a Time of Violence.

Iris Ruiz and Raul Sanchez will facilitate a roundtable discussion with authors from their new collection, Decolonizing Rhetoric and Composition Studies: New Latinx Keywords.

We will also have several performances, meals, and time for networking and socializing.

Campus Compact In Action January 2017 Stories from Civic Action Planning After signing the 30th Anniversary Action Statement, Weber State University is boldly forging ahead in their Civic Action Planning process, which includes anchor institutions and allies across the City of Ogden. Weber State University's drive to involve the broader community in civic action planning led to the development of the Ogden Civic Action Alliance, an alliance of anchor institutions across the city, including Weber State University, Ogden-Weber Technical College, the City of Ogden, Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital, Ogden Regional Medical Center, and Ogden School District. The Ogden City Action Alliance hopes to leverage the resources of all stakeholders to create substantial impact for the residents of Ogden City.
