International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering - Special Edition

Hello Everyone:

This past February, the editors of the International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering, Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (IJSLE) announced their intention to publish a special issue of the Journal to be published in December, 2013.  The editors sought high-quality manuscripts that explore:  a) scholarship, b) assessment and c) interdisciplinary engagement - related to service learning in engineering, humanitarian engineering, and social entrepreneurship - both domestically and internationally.  (See below for some suggested topics)

A number of prospective authors have contacted the editors requesting that, due to a variety of summer commitments, they have additional time to complete their manuscripts.  As such, the deadline for submitting manuscripts for the special edition will be moved to September 30, 2013 rather than the original deadline of August 30, 2013.  
There has been no change in the anticipated publication date.  Publication of the special issue continues to be planned for December, 2013.

Purpose and Scope
The special edition seeks manuscripts which focus on three areas.  These are listed below along with possible areas of concentration:
1.      Assessment of Service Learning in Engineering (SLE), Humanitarian Engineering, Social Entrepreneurship
          a.      Methods and results of assessment of student learning
          b.      Methods and results of assessment of community impacts
          c.      Methods and results of assessment of impacts on the University, College, Department and Employers
          d.      How might SLE practices be changing what and how we assess in engineering education?
2.      Scholarship of Service Learning in Engineering, Humanitarian Engineering, Social Entrepreneurship
          a.      What is SLE ‘scholarship’ as related to service learning in engineering?
          b.      P&T committees and the review process – what is SLE ‘value’?
          c.      Comparison of publications valued by the SLE community and those valued by P&T committees
          d.      Other avenues to scholarship: conferences, books, grants, workshops, etc.
          e.      Comparisons with service-learning in other disciplines, what is the state of the art, what can engineering learn from other disciplines?
3.    Interdisciplinary Engagement with Service Learning in Engineering , Humanitarian Engineering, Social Entrepreneurship
          a.    Examples of technically rigorous engineering research with strong socioeconomic context
          b.    Entrepreneurship and SLE
          c.    Curricular models of ‘breaking down the silos’ with SLE


Heartland Regional Campus Compact Conference

Join us in Tulsa at the Hyatt Regency Hotel as Oklahoma hosts the Heartland Regional Campus Compact Conference, Sept. 19th – 20th.  Stephen Black, grandson of US Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, and founder of Impact Alabama (http://impactalabama.org/) and the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility at The University of Alabama, will speak on Developing the Moral Obligations of Citizenship.  Twenty-five concurrent sessions by faculty, community partners, students and administrators will offer opportunities to learn, share and dialogue on practical service-learning skills and to deepen your philosophical understanding of civic and social responsibility.

Registration:  Register before August 23rd to receive the Early Bird registration rates.
